The Payroll Profession

I set up ISIS Support Services in 2005 to offer a technical writing and lecturing service for the payroll profession. I’d spent the last six years as the chief lobbyist for the Institute of Payroll Professionals, initially combining that with my role as payroll legislation manager for Marks and Spencer. Having got to know the payroll legislative process and with numerous contacts, both within government and the profession, I felt it was time to make this information more accessible to a wider audience.

In both my writing and lecturing I aim to explain and expand upon complex legislation in a way that the busy operational payroll manager can easily absorb, with the practical experience gleaned from running one of the largest payrolls in the country. I now write for a variety of publishers, software houses and training providers for various media and am a regular speaker on the payroll conference circuit.

My work for TAKe UP marries my writing skills, with my experience of line managing a team of more than 30, with a liberal sprinkling of the technical knowledge that over 15 years absorbed in the minutiae of payroll has afforded me.

Whilst at the IPP I coined the phrase ‘We don't simply pay people, because paying people isn’t simple’. I set up ISIS (my daughters’ initials incidentally) in order to play my part in getting a profession I’m proud to be part of the recognition it deserves. Finance and HR have achieved that by improving their influence through a combination of technical knowledge and strategic input within their organisation. Now it’s payroll’s turn to show the world what it takes to manage your organisation’s biggest controllable cost – their salary bill, as efficiently as possible whilst staying legally compliant.
